Are you and your family planning an upcoming trip this summer? How exciting! As your orthodontic care team, we want you to keep a few tips in mind to make sure you are well equipped to take good care of your teeth and braces when you are away from home.

Travelling to a new place can be exciting! There are so many things to see, try, and of course to eat too! While you are enjoying yourself, we don’t want you to forget about a good orthodontic care routine. At myORTHODONTIST we recommend following these simple tips to take care of your treatment while on vacation.

Schedule An Orthodontic Checkup
Before you go out of town or out of the country, you should visit your orthodontist so he or she can make the necessary adjustments (especially if you’ll be away for an extended period of time).

Pack An Orthodontic Travel Kit
Make sure to bring your toothbrush, floss, mouthwash, interdental cleaners, orthodontic wax, a small mirror and a water bottle for rinsing. Put them together in a small bag and label them as your ‘Orthodontic Travel Kit’ to make your things organized. If you are travelling with Invisalign clear aligners, keep your case and cleaner in a travel kit too.

Maintain Oral Hygiene
Following the proper techniques for brushing and flossing or using interdental cleaners for your braces are necessary to ensure that you keep optimum oral health while on your vacation.

Be Careful About What You Eat
While on vacation, there are many new foods to try and indulge in! However, it’s important not forget that there are foods and drinks that you should avoid to keep your braces and orthodontic treatment safe and your teeth healthy too. Some of the food and beverages that you should avoid include sodas, hard cookies, nuts, chewy and sticky candy, raw fruit and vegetables that aren’t cut into pieces and corn on the cob. Anything that could get stuck or damage your braces, you should avoid. If you are travelling with Invisalign clear aligners, remember to remove your aligners when eating and brush your teeth or rinse prior to putting them back in.

Although you may be ready to take a break and go on vacation… your orthodontic care is still at work! Keep these tips in mind and you’ll still be on the right track!

From our team at myORTHODONTIST, we hope you enjoy your summer vacation! If you have any questions about travelling during your treatment or about braces in Calgary or surrounding areas – don’t hesitate to contact one of our offices in McKenzie Towne, Southport or Okotoks.
