You’ve spent the time investing in your smile with orthodontic treatment. Now let’s make sure we protect it! Active sports can open up the risk for injuries, including those to the mouth. When wearing braces during sports, those injuries can be more severe. Let’s protect your smile, including your braces, during your favourite sports activities.
At myORTHODONTIST, we highly recommend that our patients use mouth guards during active and contact sports. This includes football, rugby, basketball, soccer, hockey, lacrosse and many more. Did you know that it is estimated that more than 200,000 oral injuries can be prevented each year if athletes use mouth guards?
A mouth guard helps to cushion impact to the mouth during sports activities, and acts as a shock absorber to protect the teeth and lower jaw from contact. This important piece of equipment helps to prevent you from accidentally biting into your lips, cheeks or tongue during sports activities. A mouth guard also helps to protect the inside of your mouth from rubbing aggressively against your braces, which would normally cause abrasions. You can even find your favourite professional athletes wearing them (including some of the Calgary Flames!). The next time you head off to court or the field, make sure to play it safe with a mouth guard! It’s just as important as any other piece of your equipment.
If you have questions about using mouth guards while wearing braces, please contact us at myORTHODONTIST! Our orthodontic teams in Calgary and Okotoks are happy to help keep your smile safe.
