A new advancement using align technology has allowed Invisalign treatment to further improve treatment for both children and teens! The new treatment option is called ‘mandibular advancement’. This is the first clear aligner advancement to solve Class II malocclusions for younger patients.
A Class II malocclusion means that your upper premolars are ahead of your lower premolars. This condition causes an overbite and is common in children or young teens. When your child experiences overbite issues it is not just their chewing abilities that are affected, but their overall appearance as well. With mandibular advancement, your child’s jaw position can improve dramatically.
How does it work?
Using the Invisalign clear aligner system, an additional phase is integrated into the orthodontic treatment plan. With the mandibular advancement phase, precision wings made of the smart track material are placed on the upper and lower aligners. When a patient bites down, the wings interlock to hold the lower jaw forward while simultaneously aligning your teeth.
Mandibular advancement can be used once there is sufficient clearance created in the patient’s mouth by orthodontic treatment. The system allows for a more patient-friendly and efficient way to solve class II malocclusions. Traditional solutions in the past included elastics, which patients can now avoid! After the mandibular advancement phase is complete, new scans are required to fine tune the treatment and finish with standard Invisalign aligners.
